10 No Sulphur Added Wines to Try

Vintage Roots

We’ve been paying attention to no sulphur added wines (also sometimes called sulphur free or sulfite free wines, etc) as far back as 2013, devoting a whole page to them and the subject in our wine list. Back then we had just nine such wines, whereas nowadays we have well over 40 wines in this category of no sulphur added.

We have always maintained that selection is vital, as there are so many poor examples on the market. Starting with healthy, clean organic grapes has to be an advantage, and over the years we have been convinced by the quality, ability to age, and sheer vibrancy of these wines.

With an increasing number of people choosing to avoid unnecessary additives as a stepping stone towards health improvement these days, there is no downside. Over the years we must have had hundreds of phone calls from consumers reporting back on the success they have had drinking not just organic (which often are lower sulphur anyway), but also ‘no sulphur added’ wines in relation to how they feel the next day. No bad reactions, and a reduction or absence in any morning after groggy feeling.

In this blog post, we pull out some of the best no sulphur added wines to try. These wines are also organic too, which means by drinking them you are also helping support a cleaner environment and protect soils and water, along with vineyard workers too.

Note: by law, organic wines are made with less sulphur as an additive to begin with, so if you choose organic wines, you are already choosing wines that are made with less sulphur added. We also have a ‘low sulphur wine‘ section on our website, which are organic wines made with less than half the maximum permitted levels of sulphur/sulfur for organic wine.

10 of the Best No Sulphur Added Wines To Try: Whites

No sulphur added white wines are are not as easy to make as no sulphur added reds, but we have been able to find these fine examples from Stellar Organic, Paul Mas and Chateau Grinou.

First on the list is Steller’s No Sulphur Added White, which is indeed one of our best selling organic whites overall. Made from 100% Colombard in only the best vintages, it shows a lovely wild flower and honey nose and real tangy freshness on the finish.

Crafted by renowned Languedoc winemaker Jean-Claude Mas, next is the Cuvée Secrète No Added Sulphur Chardonnay, which has delightful tropical fruit and subtle oak notes.

For another sensational no sulphur added white wine, try the Rien de Rien No Added Sulphur by Chateau Grinou. A gorgeous blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon results in a pure full-bodied white with complex notes of stone fruits and citrus.

These three no sulphur added whites, along with three more, are also available in our ‘No Sulphur Added Whites Six‘ mixed wine case.
