What is organic red wine?

Organic red wine is wine made in accordance with organic production standards. Always look for proof of certification to know whether a wine is truly organic (all the wines we provide are certified organic). These wines are made from grapes grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilisers – better for you and the environment. Organic wine also has a lower maximum level of sulphites.

Choosing the right organic red wine for you

There are so many fantastic organic red wines to pick from, and it all depends on your preferences. If you like bolder reds with stronger flavours, you can’t go wrong with organic Shiraz or Syrah wines, organic Malbecs, Cabernet Sauvignons or Bordeaux blends, organic Tempranillo and so many more. The scale ranges from ‘A’ for light-bodied reds to ‘E’ for fuller-bodied reds.For lighter-bodied reds, organic Pinot Noir is an obvious favourite. Beaujolais/Gamay is another lighter red, or try organic Carménère, Sangiovese, Rhône blends or Merlots, which tend to lie in the middle in terms of body and boldness. Whatever your preference, we’re confident that you’ll find quality organic reds to suit your tastes. You can also filter your choices for vegan and vegetarian wines, low or no sulphur added, as well as grape variety or country too of course.

Are organic red wines better for you?

Organic red wines are perceived to be a generally healthier option due to the lack of pesticides or herbicides and other man-made toxins used in the growing process that would otherwise find their way into the wine itself. These wines keep the flavour without any additional chemicals. Some drinkers also appreciate that organic wine has a lower maximum level of sulphites, and some organic winemakers also choose to make no added sulphur wines.

Where do the best organic red wines come from?

Contrary to popular belief, the best organic red wines come from not only the vineyards of France. They are found all over the world, from the foothills of the Argentinian Andes to the steep hillside vineyards of Portugal. Countries like Spain and Italy are also known for making fantastic reds.

What are the different types of organic red wine?

• Cabernet Sauvignon is a name recognised all over the world, thanks to the fact that it's one of the most widely grown grapes. It is found in nearly every wine-producing country because it can grow in nearly every climate. Read more in our Guide to Cabernet Sauvignon.
• Merlot is a dark red grape variety that’s popular for both varietal wines and blending. In fact, Merlot wine is best known for being added to Cabernet Sauvignon in 'Bordeaux blends'. Thanks to its soft, fleshy texture and the fact that it ripens earlier in the year, the wine is ideal for blending with the sterner, tannic Cabernet Sauvignons, which ripen later in the year.
• Shiraz or Syrah is a dark-skinned grape varietal famous for its full body and rich flavours. Syrah (like those from France ) tends to be a lighter and more peppery wine whereas Shiraz can be more full-bodied and fruitier, usually from South Africa or Australia. • Malbec was a little-known grape used primarily in the big wines of Cahors for years. In recent times, however, Argentina has moved Malbec wine to centre stage, with a plethora of producers making delicious wines from Malbec at very reasonable prices. The grapes are inky and dark, with robust tannins. Malbec is one of the six grapes permitted in Bordeaux blends, although it is only used in small quantities there.
