Description

A fantastic new red from Margaux in the Haut-Médoc.

Made from 65% Cabernet and 35% Merlot sourced from 25-year-old vines, grown on deep sandy gravel soils and aged for 16 months in a combination of 66% in clay amphorae and 33% in French oak (10% new). Deep ruby in colour with luscious aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry and plum married with notes of tobacco spice and cedar. On the palate, firm but ripe tannins give structure and a lifted acidity carries the complex black fruit flavours onto the lengthy finish.

Taste

Savoury black fruits with oaky notes

Aroma

Blackcurrant with black cherry and plum

Somewhat under the radar, this 2ème Grand Cru Classé estate produces excellent Left Bank Bordeaux reds. Since the 14th century, the Durfort de Duras family has been one of the great landowners in Médoc, and during the 17th century, their once hunting lodge was turned into a wine-growing estate. In 1758, the château was sold to George Ainslie, a Scottish wine merchant, whose youngest daughter would marry the Chevalier de Vivens. It was their son, Viscount de Vivens, who would add his name to that of Durfort in 1824. Classified as a 2nd cru estate in 1855, today it is owned by Gonzague Lurton, who started to convert the estate to be organic and biodynamic in 2009. In 2016, he obtained both organic and biodynamic certifications for Château Durfort-Vivens, the first Margaux Grand Cru Classé to be doubly certified. A wonderful expression of the Margaux appellation.
