Organic White Wines

We have refreshing white wines from all over the world, from familiar favourites such as Sauvignon and Pinot Grigio, to incredible indigenous varieties like Hárslevelü and Xarel.lo. Whatever style of wine you prefer, we believe that the best white wine is produced using organic methods, with minimal intervention, giving the best tasting results, as well as creating a healthy, sustainable environment in the vineyard. ...

Unlike its crimson-coloured cousin, white wine is more notable for its high acidity and lack of tannins (this is because tannins come mainly from the grape skins, which are usually discarded in white winemaking). As such, it can be more refreshing and may appeal more to those who find full-bodied wine to be a little too heavy for their liking. This doesn’t mean, though, that full-bodied whites don’t exist. Many top white wines from across the world, particularly Chardonnay from places like Burgundy and South America, will be full-bodied, with lots of ripe fruit and often oak ageing which can add a luscious creamy texture and vanilla flavours.

White wine is best served chilled in order to retain its original acidity and crispy fruit flavour. Most experts recommend serving at around 8-12 degrees, depending on the style of the wine. Light whites such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio, and sparkling wines and Champagnes are all best served at the lower end to maximise freshness, while fuller-bodied Chardonnays and oak-aged wines can benefit from being served at the higher end so as not to inhibit the complex aromas and flavours. If in doubt, start cold and you can always warm the glass in your hand!

When it comes to variety, Chardonnay is the most famous of all the white wines with roots in Burgundy in eastern France. Today, though, it is grown all over the globe. Chardonnay is more popularly known for its fruity flavours, which typically include pears, apples, and apricot. In warmer climates like Australia and New Zealand, Chardonnay flavours may include a hint of melon and peach.

Another famous white wine is Sauvignon Blanc which has had a huge boost in popularity over the last 10-15 years, due largely to the new style coming from New Zealand, particularly the Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs. These have ripe fruit flavours of gooseberry and even passionfruit. More traditional styles of Sauvignon Blanc come from the Loire Valley in France where it is the grape variety in regions such as Sancerre and Pouilly Fume. Touraine Sauvignon Blanc is a great value wine from the Loire region.
