Description

Another stunning vintage of this great wine; stylish with slightly nutty citrus fruit flavours.

Looking for a tasty white other than Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc? Look no further than this stylish organic and biodynamic Verdicchio from the east coast of central Italy. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC is the most famous Verdicchio wine, and this DOC from Pievalta has striking citrus fruits with the attractive nutty flavours for which this grape is rightly famous. Steely dry, this wine will sing with simply grilled fish.

Expert Opinion:

  • 93 points, Tom Hyland (2021 vintage), ‘Aromas of lime, melon and tea leaf. Medium-full with excellent ripeness, lively acidity, outstanding varietal purity and excellent persistence. There is beautiful harmony and excellent brightness and freshness; the finish offers notes of spearmint and citrus oil. Enjoy over the next 4-5 years, perhaps longer.’
  • Gold Medal – International Organic Wine Awards 2016 (2015 vintage)
  • 93/100 – Decanter Magazine, ‘Pievalta’s entry-level Verdicchio comes from a warmer, more Adriatic-influenced site than its San Paolo single-vineyard expression. This makes for a richer, more exotic but still savoury and intense wine. Biodynamic. Drink 2017-2020.’ Monty Waldin, Decanter February 2017 (2015 vintage)
  • 16.5/20 – JancisRobinson.com, ‘Stony white fruit with a hint of mandarin. Linear lemon palate and then ends on a fine leesy note. Mid length.‘ Walter Speller, August 2016 (2015 vintage)

Pievalta lies in the heart of Castelli di Jesi in the Marche region of eastern Italy – a region famous for its quality Verdicchio wines. The estate takes its name (‘Pievalta’) from the small parish church located at the entrance of the property. It was established in 2002 and purchased by the Barone Pizzini estate (in Franciacorta) to develop Verdicchio wines of great quality. The estate covers a total area of 44 hectares of property, and in 2008, Pievalta was first to be biodynamic certified in the Le Marche region. Only natural preparations are worked with and organic and plant compounds to encourage the formation of fertile humus and energise the growth of the plants. The management of Pievalta’s vineyards and winemaking has been assigned to Alessandro Fenino, an oenologist with a number of successful harvests and seasons at Barone Pizzini under his belt. In 2008, Alessandro was joined by Silvia Loschi, his colleague at Barone Pizzini and now his life companion.
