Bobal is the star performing grape in this region, and here it is blended to great effect with Merlot. Oak aged for three months, it has an almost flinty nose, with ripe berried richness expanding on the palate, with hints of smoke and leather. Lovely balance, complexity and finish. A very complete wine of very high quality.
55% Bobal, 45% Merlot. Vines aged 30 -55 years in the Casa Alfaro vineyard at 700 m altitude on clay/limestone soils over gravel. Matured for three months in a mix of European oak barrels. Deep-pile dark fruit with lashings of briar and damson plum character. A mantle of toasty oak adds to the ensemble, but in a well-judged, tempered manner. Ripe tannins provide the necessary backbone and structure. Heady, individual and well balanced. A wholesome red for the dinner table – smart packaging too!
90 Points – Decanter Magazine, ‘Look out for Bobal; this once-rustic variety is coming up in the world. Lower yields and conscientious viticulture and winemaking are making the difference. Utiel-Requena and its neighbouring DOs are great hunting grounds for full-flavoured, honest reds. Caprasia has a note of Merlot, and just three months’ oak ageing.
