Easter time is the first big occasion for get togethers, and family meals that comes after Christmas (for obvious reasons). The food is not usually as lavish or rich, and accompanying wines do not have to be as ‘heavy’ or intense to match popular dishes like ham, lamb, fish or quiche etc.

In many ways there’s no right or wrong with food and wine matching (a few things are to be avoided though!), and you will doubtless have your own favourites and ideas. We’ve been having a chat here at Vintage Roots and we think the following selection ticks the right boxes, and would recommend:

Some Fizz
Well, always helps and what better way to get proceedings off to a good start. These two are not the usuals (Champagne, Cava or Prosecco), but are perfect choices for something special from Italy and England, that doesn’t need to be as pricey as Champagne.

Some White or Rosé
Our Chilean Touchstone Rosé has attractive forward strawberry fruit, and ends dry which would match all types of ham dishes, as would our excellent Mosel Riesling or again from Chile the terrific value Gewürtraminer. These wines are however versatile enough to match many other fish, cheese based or vegetarian dishes.

Some Reds
Lamb is traditional at Easter and a brilliant match is the Clos de Caveau Vacqueyras (see the Gîte offer in this mailing), or a lighter Pinot noir from Burgundy. A fortified Malbec from Jean Bousquet in Argentina in 50cl at 18% would be a superb match for a chocolate based dessert or even with cheese. Drink lightly chilled.

Whatever you are doing, we wish you a very happy and peaceful Easter time.
