Winemaking was only brought to California in the 18th century by Spanish missionaries, but wine-making took a hit in the Prohibition Era. By the mid 1900s, California was famous for its port-style wines. After The Judgment of Paris (when California wine was crowned superior in a blind-tasting event), California has become the #1 wine-producing region in the Western Hemisphere.

In California, there are over 60 different grape varietals planted and grown. The climate of California makes it ideal for Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Petit Sirah, and Pinot Noir--all of which are now synonymous with California wine. Other grapes grown here include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Grenache.
