Albury Organic Vineyard- 2018
Albury Organic Vineyard, headed up by Nick Wenman is situated on the southern slopes of the North Downs near Guildford in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Biodynamic techniques are used to enhance the quality of fruit, and we're delighted to be able to offer this vintage of rosé which is only produced in tiny quantity (the first vintage was snapped up by the Queen to have on the Royal Barge for the Jubilee Celebrations!). 'Silent Pool' is a lake of crystal clear water adjacent to the vineyard. according to local legend a beautiful young maiden drowned here, escaping the clutches of King John, and now haunts the Silent Pool!
Recommended by Matthew Jukes in Vineyard Magazine, 'I have been waiting for this wine for a very long time. This wine is alone in delivering not only a stunningly appointed nose and palate, but it also has the X-Factor. Silent Pool Rosé has layers of minerality, grip and texture plus what I call 'anti-fruit' elements, which add immeasurably to the complexity on the palate while at the same time doing a perfect job of highlighting the unquestionable calibre of the biodynamic Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier used here. When you add to this heavenly liquid a bottle, screwcap and label redesign which must be one of the most impressive packaging transformations I have ever seen, this is a wine which is operating at the very highest levels of world rosé production. Oh, did I mention it is a tiptoe light 10.5% alcohol. It is near-perfect in every respect apart from the limited 4000 bottle production.' May 2018 (2017 vintage)
16/20 - JancisRobinson.com, 'Light wild-salmon pink. Very delicate on the nose. Bone, bone dry, just the right side of painfully dry, and pithy. Grapefruit. A little chalky, crushed shells, finely sketched – almost brittle it’s so fine, and yet there is a mid-palate reverberation of tightly strung acidity that gives this barely-there wine quite extraordinary length. To go with the most delicate of foods – be very careful not to drown this rather lovely whisper out' Tamlyn Currin, June 2018 (2017 vintage)
Recommended in GQ Magazine, 'Albury’s Silent Pool is a rosé of unquestioned calibre. A delicate blend of pinot noir and pinot meunier grapes grown in the Surrey Hills, this delightfully dry wine is a true English all star.' Millicia West, April 2019
Albury Organic Vineyard
Albury Organic Vineyard (just 12 acres of vines) is situated on the southern slopes of the North Downs in the beautiful Surrey Hills, just outside Guildford on the A25 towards Dorking. The vines are the traditional Champagne varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, as well as some Seyval and Pinot Gris. The focus is on crafting organic English wines of the highest quality, in particular a fine rosé and exemplary sparkling wines, the first of which was released in May 2015. The vineyard is privately owned by Nick Wenman who lives in Shere near to the vineyard. Nick worked for 30 years in the IT business, which he retired from in 2006. He founded Albury Organic Vineyard in 2008 and now spends most of his time on the vineyard and managing the business, which has become his passion. Nick Wenman and his team are committed to producing organic and biodynamic fruit without the use of chemicals such as herbicides and fungicides. Whilst copper and sulphur are permitted in organic vineyards they minimise their use. They also use compost "teas", which improve the biology of the soil, as well as using biodynamic preparations. The belief is that this approach will produce premium fruit and therefore great wine. The vineyard is managed by Alex who achieved a doctorate in Horticultire at Milan University in 1996. Following several years of practical experience working on vineyards in Italy and New Zealand, she joined RHS Wisley, responsible for the Orchard, Nursery, Model Fruit Area and the Vineyard which she planted. Albury currently produce three organic sparkling wines, Albury Estate Classic Cuvée, Albury Estate Blanc de Blancs and Albury Estate Sparkling Rosé. They have so far won Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in the International Organic Wine Awards 2016, Decanter, the International Wine Competition and UKVA. Their first rosé appeared back in 2011, a still wine made exclusively from hand picked organic Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes. This first vintage was served on board the Royal barge to celebrate the diamond jubilee, and the 2014 vintage won a gold award in the UKVA Wine of the Year competition.
