Meinklang - 2016/17
The ‘H’ here refers to the wine being 100% Harslevelu grape (and the number is the vintage). Grown high on terraces amongst lava pillars on the famous extinct volcano of Somlo in Hungary, this unique wine has fleshy stone fruit flavours and typical bracing minerality, adding complexity and depth. The wine spends some time in contact with the grape skins, which adds texture and colour, giving a wonderfully natural, orange wine. Unfiltered and low sulphur.
90 Points, The Wine Gang, ‘A rich, spicy, concentratedly mineral, dry white with a rigorous spine of acidity – all of which will stand it in good stead for a few years. It’s made from Hárslevelü grown amidst the lava deposits of the extinct Somló volcano.‘ May 2015 (2013 vintage)
17/20 Jancis Robinson MW, ‘The Hungarian grape grown just over the border in Hungary and still part of [Meinklang owners] the Michlits’ farm. Extremely lively and chock full of character. Dense and powerful with good acidity.‘ JancisRobinson.com (2010 vintage)
