Colchagua Valley, Chile
Las Niñas- 2013

The Las Ninas premium red is always a blend of carefully selected grapes from the best plots in Apalta. The assemblage of the 2013 vintage is 53% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah, 14% Merlot & 12% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 10-12 months in French oak barrels it has tones of dark red fruits with developing aromas of eucalyptus and blackberries. A rich and dense structure with round and elegant tannins.

Las Niñas

In 1996, Bernard Dauré persuaded his friends, Jean Pierre Cayard and Claude Florensa to embark on a crazy idea, to join him in creating a wine estate at Apalta in Chile. The girls (Las Ninas) from the three families soon fell in love with the land, in the Colchagua Valley, which is only a two hour drive south of Santiago, the country’s capital. Over three years they planted 160 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Syrah, Mourvèdre and other varieties. A purpose-built modern winery has been built to satisfy the increasing demand for their wines around the world. The feminine touch is abundantly evident in their silky smooth fruit driven red wines and Apalta is considered the jewel in the crown of the Colchagua Valley lying at the foothills of the Andes.

Apalta sits in a horseshoe shaped valley protected on three sides by hills, some as high as 600 metres. Gentle breezes moderate the summer daytime heat as does the proximity of the Tinguiririca River, which also provides the water for the necessary irrigation. Soils are a mix of sandy/clay with rocky volcanic outcrops, especially towards the foothills. All wines are the responsibility of head winemaker Eugenio Lira. Their organic range of wines aims to capture the the pure, vibrant flavours of the grapes as grown in this wonderful grape growing climate, with its significant day/night temperature swing helping to preserve freshness, whilst also being kind to the environment, the staff working at the estate and, of course, to the consumer.
