Description

Intense, ruby red colour with a hint of garnet on the rim. A voluptuous and harmonious mouthfeel with dominant dark forest fruits, figs and cloves.

Considered by many to be Portugal’s finest grape variety, Touriga Nacional plays a big part in the blends used for Ports. However, it’s increasingly being used for high quality wines in its own right, so much so that Bordeaux has approved it as a new permitted variety. The tiny berries produce intense, highly aromatic wines and this bottle aged 2018 has all the hallmarks of this noble grape. Super concentrated at 15.5% alcohol.

Taste

Red cherry and blackberry

Aroma

Lifted floral aromas with notes of coffee and mocha.

The Herdade dos Lagos estate is in Portugal’s Alentejo region, a large area in the south of the country with vast open undulating land. Here the climate is hot, with the poorer soils going to cork oaks, vineyards and olive trees. This increasingly popular region produces more ‘new world’ style wines with ripe fruit and full bodied character. The 1000 hectare estate is all organic and has been since 2008. Apart from it’s 25 hectares under vine, it produces Native Olive oil, Carob, Honey and merino wool from the 1000 sheep that graze here. Red varieties include Aragonez, Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and whites are Alvarinho and Arinto. We are excited to list three quality wines from this new estate, which goes beyond just organic, embracing programmes to protect natural water resources, increase and encourage biodiversity, as well as taking care of all it’s own energy requirements, with a successful solar energy project. They are original members of ‘Wines of Alentejo Sustainability Programme’ or WASP for short.
