Description

A 100% Malagouzia, an indigenous ancient Greek grape variety said to be like a cross between Viognier and Chardonnay.

A 100% Malagouzia, which is an indigenous ancient Greek grape variety said to be like a cross between Viognier and Chardonnay. This wine is made from hand-picked and sorted skin contact fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a constant low temperature. It’s light green-yellow in colour and intensively aromatic with clear scents of apricot, peach, pear and a natural hint of lemon peel. Dry and well-balanced with a clean backbone of fresh acidity. It would be great with seafood, poultry, light-sauced pasta dishes and fresh vegetable salads.

87 points Wine Advocat, “The 2020 Malgouzia Windmill is unoaked, dry and comes in at 13.1% alcohol. It’s Malagouzia, meaning lots of flavour and aromatics that make it impossible to resist. This grape, done right, is one of the Greece’s secret weapons. There isn’t a lot of power, and it could use a bit more energy, but it tastes great. It’s a typical middle-of-the-road Malagouzia that is easy to knock back and hard to dislike. To be sure, it’s not a high personality Malagouzia, and the aromatics are a bit restrained, but it does enough right. It has reasonable stuffing too. Drink this on the young side for best results.” December 2021

Having grown up in the vineyards, olive and orange groves of Mycenae and Corinth, Michalis Giannikos decided to follow his ancestors and to continue the work in the vineyards but with a modern approach. From a young age he was impressed by the century long history of wine making in the region and the different style of wines, aromas and tastes the Greek grape varieties can produce. The unique microclimate and terroir gave him the opportunity to make improvements in the vineyards. As a result, he switched to organic cultivation and became one of the first organic wine makers in Greece. At the same time, he started to experiment with international grape varieties. He wanted to see how they behave in the Greek climate and what benefits can arise. Pleased with the results he decided to continue with both Greek and internationally recognised grape varieties. The vineyards comprise of 8 ha over two sites one in Corinth around the winery and the other in Mycenae. The cooling winds together with the Mediterranean sun and the soil provide the best conditions for their indigenous and selected international grape varieties. Greece has rich heritage of indigenous grape varieties. Giannikos have planted the unique Roditis, Agiorgitiko and rediscovered Malagouzia.
