Domaine Py- 2015
30 year old vines produce this super-concentrated but very approachable Merlot that exhibits all the right plummy black fruit flavours and soft ripe tannins. A superb-value wine that punches well above it's price tag and looks the part too.
Domaine Py is ideally situated in the Cathare country between Carcassonne and Narbonne in the Languedoc region of Southern France. More precisely, this fine 160 hectare estate lies in the commune of Douzens with fine views of the Mont d'Alaric (a popular flying venue with hang-gliders). Anchored in soils of clay/limestone and loam the vines here benefit from the confluence of cooler maritime air from the Mediterranean and warm air from the Aude plain. Run by Jean-Pierre Py and his family, the domaine pulled out of the local cooperative in order to focus on quality and organics. Since 2003, therefore, Domaine Py has been run as a private estate comprising fields, olive groves and woodland alongside its swathe of vineyards. Conversion to organic viticulture began in 2008 culminating in official organic certification by Ecocert in 2012. Jean-Pierre is guided by a desire to work as authentically as possible in all aspects of vine growing and winemaking. The family has deep respect for the soil and the environment, believing that their terroir is their heritage. They strive to preserve it as naturally as possible. A wide variety of grape varieties are grown on the estate - Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan for the classic Corbières wines , Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay for their range of IGPs (formerly known as vins de pays). Whilst work in the vineyards was and remains the top priority, significant investment was also undertaken in order to improve the cellar and vinification equipment. Five years of hard work and dedicated effort has brought the estate proudly in to the premier league of wine estates in the region. Jean-Pierre is working with biodynamics on several parcels of his vines as he strives to find the ideal balance between nature, the environment and man. Furthermore he has started producing wines with no suplur added in his aim to safeguard the purity of the wine's natural flavour as well as the health of the consumer. Combining the best of traditions with the best of contemporary techniques ensures that Jean-Pierre's wines truly reflect their precise origins.
