Ideal for warm evenings when you still want a red, but more gentle velvet sipper instead of a blockbusting new world monster.
The family owned and run Domaine Bersan is one of the beacons of quality in the Auxerrois appellation just a few kilometers to the south and west of Chablis. With a history spanning several generations, the domaine maintains the best of traditional practices whilst also being conscious of more contemporary skills.
The current era lies in the talented hands of Jean-Louis Bersan and his son Jean-Christophe. Located in Saint-Bris-le-Vineux the estate comprises 22 hectares of vines growing on a mix of chalk and clay soils, which lend a marked freshness to the resulting wines. Similar in profile to the wines of their more famous neighbour, Chablis, the style of the Bersan offerings reflect a keen edged acidity and vitality making them wonderfully appetising. Growing Aligoté, Sauvignon and Chardonnay for the white varieties with Pinot Noir, Gamay and César for the red varieties, the Bersan family offerings mirror the heritage and authentic styling of wines from this oft-overlooked region.
The commune of Saint-Bris is endowed with a maze of ancient vaulted cellars dating from the 11th and 12th century. Domaine Bersan is no exception. In fact, the many such cellars here act as a major tourist attraction! Their ideal natural temperature (12 degrees centigrade) and humidity (80%) control, however, has always meant that they represent a perfect environment for the gentle maturation of wine. This is still very true today, especially for those wines that undergo barrel ageing, including their elegant pair Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Bourgogne Cotes d'Auxerre.
