Domaine Michel Magnien - 2015
Classic Burgundian Pinot Noir, with excellent value and an affordable price tag considering its provenance. The nose gives you strong hints of red cherries and dusty plums, along with just a hint of pine needles to add freshness to the aromas. The palate is supple and silky, with flavours of rhubarb, black cherry, and anis to bring the intensity. There is just enough of the coffee, clove, and meaty notes infused by the oak barrel to make it a classy vintage, and it’s the right choice when you want something to show off to guests. As with many of the best Burgundy wines, those from Michel Magnien are produced in tiny quantities, and are highly sought after. Prices for their Grand Cru wines can be very high, but the attention to detail and winemaking skills are exactly the same for this wine as his Grand Cru, making this a great value Burgundy.
88 Points, The Wine Gang, ‘Captivating, rose-garden and vanilla perfume and a supple, silky palate bathed in sweet, cherryish fruit and delicate acidity. A promising newcomer to Vintage Roots’ portfolio, although the purity of the fruit is just slightly drowned out by the meaty, coffee-and-clove notes of the oak. It may settle down, but we can’t help feeling that a little less oak would give a little more wine.‘ May 2015 (2012 vintage)
