Bonterra Zinfandel is from vines with an average age of 35-40 years old. Winemaker Bob Blue says "It's a wine we try not to manipulate much because the fruit from these exceptional vineyards simply doesn't need it. Our biodynamic Butler ranch contributes Zinfandel and Petite Sirah to the blend. We've tamed the wine a bit without losing any of the rich aromas of red raspberry and brambly fruit with a touch of white pepper and cedar spice. This remains the Zen of Zin."
Ten Best Organic Wines - Independent on Sunday April 2014 (2010 vintage)
Bonterra are one of the biggest names in organic winemaking. Their farming practices are ‘back to the future’: composting, cover crops, and natural cycles create a soil that is rich and vital, from which grow naturally healthy vines and intensely concentrated, flavourful grapes. Bob Blue, winemaker at Bonterra was recently quoted as saying 'The organic system is a food system that more and more people have come to trust. I can remember in my earlier days seeing a skull and crossbones sign by one vineyard, saying “Don’t go into this vineyard for 30 days”!'
